Understanding Copyright Law (Legal Text Series)
Published in Paperback by Matthew Bender & Company (July, 1999)
Author: Marshall A. Leaffer
Average review score:

If you own only one copyright practice aid . . .
I used this book to learn Copyright law while in school. I have since found that is the essential guide for practice as well. Not many of my law school text books have made it to my office shelves. . .this book is not only in my office, but it is on my desk whenever an IP issue arises. It is excellent.

Unofficial History
Published in Textbook Binding by Greenwood Publishing Group (June, 1974)
Author: Field Marshall W. Slim
Average review score:

Excellent reading, short stories on military leadership.
Another excellent book by Sir William Slim (check out Defeat Into Victory). This is a series of short stories drawn from Slim's own experience. Well written and interesting this book works well on many levels. The stories are great by themselves. They offer a fascinating view into some less well know campaigns. Each story has buried in it a valuable lesson in leadership. Should be included in any discussion on leadership (at least it should if it were in print).

The Useful Wild Plants of Texas, the Southeastern and Southwestern United States, the Southern Plains, and Northern Mexico
Published in Hardcover by Useful Wild Plants Inc (June, 1995)
Authors: Scooter Cheatham, Marshall Conring Johnston, and Lynn Marshall
Average review score:

A must have!
Definitely a must have for those interested in plants! You'll never look at the "weeds" around your house the same again :)

Extremely in depth coverage of plants from Abronia spp. to Arundo spp. is given, including all manners of uses from culinary to utilitarian. (Other genuses are to be covered in future volumes.) The book is full of wonderful color photographs of all the plants covered - usually several per plant. There are wide margins listing the various uses of the plants (pointing out their discussion in the text), location diagrams of where the plants are found and more.

Although the book covers only the areas described in the title, anyone with more than a fleeting interest in useful plants is sure to appreciate this book - no matter where they might reside.

The book is steeply priced for sure, but once you open it you will understand why. It is extremely well researched, a fact that is very evident throughout the text. Also, as mentioned above, the book abounds with gorgeous color photographs. Had the book not been a gift, I would have gladly paid twice the price for it.

The next volume(s) couldn't come fast enough for me. I am beginning to get a bit worried though as to the future of the series since I obtained my copy in 1996 and haven't heard anything on newer volumes... Even if this is the only volume that comes out it is still definitely worth the purchase.

Congratulations on a wonderful book to Scooter Cheatham and Marshall C. Johnston.

--> Update: The second volume did come out! If you can believe it, it's even better than this one! :D

The Venture of Islam: The Gunpowder Empire and Modern Times
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (March, 1977)
Author: Marshall G. Hodgson
Average review score:

deep, rich, well considered and comprehensive
This review really applies to all three volumes. Hodgson's work is not for those new to Islamic studies, and his writing style is complex. Few are the sentences that lack at least one subjunctive clause. But his adoption of key Arabic terms in his narrative; his broad geographic sweep, from Andalusia and the Sahel through Nile and Oxus to India and Indonesia; and his comprehensive consideration of political, social, religious, cultural, and economic aspects of civilization make for a series as broad and deep as this student of history could want. It took me several years to read the whole set, as only recently did I have enough interest in the artistic and philisophic (falsafah) traditions.

Villisca: The True Account of the Unsolved 1912 Mass Murder That Stunned the Nation
Published in Paperback by Aventine Press (March, 2003)
Author: Roy Marshall
Average review score:

Villisca
Mr. Marshall has taken cold historical facts and written a book that weaves you into the mindsets and personalities of the investigators and the accused of this unsolved murder. The result is a book that contains enough content to satisfy the analytical historical mind as well as a story line that would delight those readers merely seeking a good mystery.

Visual C++ 2: Developing Professional Applications in Windows 95 and Nt Using Mfc/Book and Disk
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall Computer Books (July, 1995)
Authors: Marshall Brain and Lance Lovette
Average review score:

VisualC++2
I have purchased many books on Visual C++. However, VisualC++2 by Marshall Brain and Lance Lovette is the book that describes this difficult subject in the most understandable and useful way. I refer to it often. The level of detail is very good and concepts are explained very clearly.

Voices
Published in Paperback by Xulon Press (January, 2003)
Author: Eleanor Marshall Manning
Average review score:

Comfort for the Heart & Soul
Bravo to Eleanor Marshall Manning for providing comfort to the hearts and souls of so many "regular people." Almost all of us will come across a time in our lives that requires us to become either short-term or long-term caregivers for our families, friends and nieghboors. This book is a "must read" for anyone going through this process.

The book is also uniquely comforting to anyone that has ever experienced a significant loss. It gives voice to the millions of caregivers, terminally ill individuals, and departed loved ones that cannot physically speak for themselves.

The inclusion of journaling pages throughout the book, encourage our hearts to heal through meditation, prayer and spiritual reflection.

I believe the epilogue can be especially comforting to all Americans that experienced a loss in the 911 tragedy.

I'm so grateful for this wonderful gift.

Review of Living (and dying) in Avalanche Country
A fascinating book about one of the most dangerous avalanche areas in the U.S.. With plenty of amazing photographs and interesting interviews, the authors provide a look at the incredible beauty of the area, and the awesome destructive force of avalanches in the San Juan Mountains in Southwest Colorado. A great book for anyone interested in experiencing mountain back country, or in the history of how the people of this area have learned to live with these incredible forces of nature.
